The area you point at is often not where the change started

Most people arrive at a volume conversation with one spot in mind. The cheek that has flattened. The shadow that photographs badly. The mouth area that seems to sit differently than it used to. That instinct is understandable, and it is also the single most common reason the assessment does not stop where you pointed.

The nominated area is a symptom, not an address

Facial fullness and balance shift gradually, and they shift together. What you notice in one place may be reading as a shadow or a flatness because of how the structure around it has changed - not because anything is happening in that exact spot. The area that catches your eye in a photograph is where the change became visible, which is not the same as where it originated.

There is no way to tell those two apart from the outside. You cannot compare an area against itself. It only resolves by holding cheeks, lips, chin and jawline up against one another, in person, in the same light - which is why, at our Seddon rooms, volume loss is a consultation-led concern rather than something answered online.

What "as a whole" means in practice

In a facial volume consultation, Registered Nurse Nqobile Nhlebela assesses facial balance across cheeks, lips, chin and jawline as one related whole, with your concerns, history and goals listened to properly. You may well leave with a different understanding of what you were seeing than the one you walked in with. That is a common and useful outcome of a first visit.

It is worth knowing what does not happen. Nothing proceeds on the day of a first consultation unless it is right to. Options for restoring facial volume are prescription-only in Australia and cannot be advertised or booked directly, so the consultation is where any suitable option is explained plainly, along with its realistic outcome, longevity and cost. Declining to proceed is always an option, and there is no obligation either way.

If you bring one thing, make it your own sense of when you first noticed the change and what has shifted since - that timeline is yours alone, and it is the part no assessment can reconstruct for you. Everything else is what the whole-face read is for.

General information only - not medical advice. Suitability is assessed individually at consultation. Written with AHPRA and TGA advertising guidance in mind.
